" You are just AWESOME!! I watched your videos before I had anything. When I got my setup (which was also easy to decide what I should buy with your help through emails and wonderful videos) it took me couple of minutes to actually start mixing for real. All because of your help.
I have learned many things from your videos. You are simply the best ; P
Hopefully I get a camera soon and record myself and post it up.
Thanks for everything. I will always practice and enjoy = )
Best regards mate!

Ten Minute Mix CompetitionWorldwide

Please Note this new rule:

NEW RULE: We will display the last video we pick up
(This should be the last you upload or set as a response, but we might get confused if you upload them very close together)
This means you can rerecord or change your mix if you are not happy with it
BUT the votes for your first video will NOT be carried over to the next one. Your mix will start again at zero.
So uploading more than one mix will usually make you less likely to win

The new judging system:

We are trying out a new judging system for some of the competitions.

Anyone who has sent in a video to DJ Tutor is eligible to vote IF they can be seen in the video.

So if you have entered the tenminmix, mashup, back2back or DJMag Micromix competitions, or sent in a ten minute mix, or a Profilez video, or are an Import , you can judge.

You can judge a competition you have entered, but you cannot give less than 5 points.

You cannot judge your own mix.

You can judge each mix once.

To log in you will be redirected to Youtube to give us access to your Youtube username. We cannot access any passwords or personal information that is not already visible on your Youtube channel page.

Guidelines for Judging

Please judge mixes on the following criteria:

  1. Quality of mixing
  2. Construction of mix.
  3. Choice of music - ie: selection of tracks that work well together. Please do not judge on musical taste. Do not give marks because someone has played a track you particularly like or is playing your favourite genre.
  4. Beat matching should be manual, and people should lose points if it is automated.
  5. Video effects and editing are allowed but do not give extra points for cool video effects. The competition is about mixing. People should lose points if the effects or editing make it difficult to see their mixing, especially if it could cover up the sneaky editing together of two or more mixes. The mix should have been done in real time.
  6. The mix should be ten minutes long. But points will automatically be deducted if it is more than 630 seconds or less than 570 seconds, so do not need to take the length into account.
  7. Scratching is allowed, and can add to a mix, but the competition is about mixing, not turntablism.
  8. Judge people on their mixing skills, not their appearance or personality.

The Rules

Just upload a ten minute mix, as a response to this video.

That's all. You don't have to give your name, you don't have to say anything, you don't have to put in the tenminmix tag anymore. Just do a mix using any DJ gear, thats it!

Responses received by 23:00 GMT on the last day of the month will be entered in this month's Competition

Responses received after that time will be entered into the next month's competition

Your video must appear on Youtube as a response by the finish time, so allow a good safety margin for uploading, say 12 hours.

First place winners of this competition or the MicroMix competition may not enter.

However:

Winners of other competitions eg Mash Up and Back2back may enter

Importz may also enter

We will only display one mix per person per month.

Guidelines for entrants

Exactly how the judging will work will depend on how many mixes come in, but here are some guidelines:

  • The mix should be about ten minutes. If it's longer than 10:30 or shorter than 9:30 you're unlikely to win.
  • The judges need to see that you are really mixing in one go. If you edit the video in a way that makes that difficult, you're very unlikely to win.
  • Try to impress early on.
  • If there are hundreds of entries, the judges are more likely to look at the most discussed and highest rated on Youtube.
  • Early entries will probably get more attention.
  • Don't re-enter a video you have entered in a previous competition. But do use a video you have sent in as a ten minute mix.

FAQs

How exactly is the top ten decided?

This system is very new and so it is still being reviewed.

This is how it worked in April:

The votes were added together in a number of different ways ie: including or not including people's votes for themselves, adding all the votes for a mix or taking the average or somewhere in between.

Without seeing the detailed results, Johnathan was asked to judge the twenty most popular.

His top ten was compared to the different ways of adding up the votes, and the votes cast by the other original judges were looked at too.

What looked like the fairest method on paper, ie halfway between adding up the votes for a mix and taking an average, and not including people's votes for themselves, was almost an exact match for Johnathan's top ten.

We used the same method in May, with Johnathan allowed to make changes if necessary
